Amsterdam, known for many things and seen as more of the ‘black sheep’ among European cities. Rightly so, mainly Amsterdam tourism is popularly known for two things: drugs and prostitution. However, Amsterdam also offers great cultural and artistic museums which hold a very important position in the world of arts and culture (eg. The Van Gogh museum and the Rijksmuseum).

    Amsterdam tourist attractions

    1: Dam Square
Situated right in the centre of downtown Amsterdam, Dam Square is majestic in its own right, and plays host to the lovely Royal Palace and New Church. Opposite the palace you will find the War Monument, dedicated to those lost on the 2nd World War.
                2: The Red Light District
Since prostitution is legal in The Netherlands, there is no shame in venturing into this area of decandence and sex. Rather than the prostitutes walking around like in any other city, the girls stand in window bathed in red light. Prostitutes in The Red Light District are clean and well protected, and it is seen as more of a tourist attraction than an actual place of business
                3: Madame Tussaud
Located on Dam Square, this museum is basically like the ones you will find in New York and London. A clever bit of Amsterdam history has been included in this version however, and adds to the fun sphere of the museum. Wax statues of all your favorite movie, sports and music stars can be found here.
                4: Anne Frank House
The story of a little girl in the 2nd World War, hiding with her family from the invading Nazi’s and keeping a diary of her horrific experience, has touched the world. A beautiful museum has been built in her honor and is now situated in the exact same house where Anne and her family was staying. This museum also has interactive exhibits where visitors can join in on polls and discussions.
                5: Van Gogh museum
Situated on the beautiful Museumplein, the Van Gogh Museum is definitely a must see for art lovers on a visit to Amsterdam. Starting with his earliest works, and taking you through to his last and most famous paintings, the whole exhibit is like an ode to Van Gogh himself. Detailed and informative, the museum is for sure your money’s worth.

    6: Rijksmuseum
Also a building on the Musuemplein, the Rijksmuseum holds some of Hollands most famous and inspiring paintings. Works of Johannes Vermeer, Rembrandt van Rijn and Jan Steen are all on display in the museum. The main focus of course being The Nightwatch, painted by Rembrandt in 1642.
                7: Canal Cruise
Amsterdam is renowned for its beautiful canals (grachte in Dutch), trees and rickety 16th century old houses. With a canal cruise, you can experience all that Amsterdam has to offer without walking your feet to a stump. In addition to day cruises, there are also romantic dinner cruises, which give you a chance to see the beautiful city at night.
                8: Nieuwmarkt
The original entrance of Amsterdam from the ocean has been transformed throughout the years. Once the place of public executions, it was the place where Rembrandt got his inspiration for his painting ‘The Anatomy Lesson of Dr. Tulip’.
Today it is used as a restaurant, surrounded by cafés, bars and also bordering on the Red Light District.
                9: Leidseplein
The epicenter of nightlife in Amsterdam, Leidseplein (along with the smaller Rembrandtsplein) offers a wide selection of bars, pubs and clubs for every taste. Also dotted with fine restaurants and terraces in the summer, Leidseplein is definitely a great place to spend the afternoon.
                10: Waterlooplein
Close to the Jewish Historical museum, and Rembrandts House, Waterlooplein is definitely a square to be visited. In addition to world class tourist attractions, there is also a market which is opened 6 days a week on the square.
